Will remote working persist after 19 July?

Following on from last month’s blog about hybrid working and according to an article in The Times, six million professionals in Britain are at risk of losing their jobs if the trend of remote working continues, the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change has said.

A report by the former prime minister’s think tank said that the remote working “mass experiment” had made white-collar roles vulnerable to being shipped overseas.

Economists, accountants, graphic designers and software experts face unemployment on a scale similar to the loss of manufacturing jobs in the Eighties and Nineties “but on an accelerated timeframe”, it said.

About 5.9 million jobs — 18 per cent of the UK’s workforce — could be moved offshore, the report found.

“Having put in place the digital infrastructure to make remote working possible, businesses — especially larger ones — are likely to persist with it even after the pandemic in order to reduce overheads, boost productivity and recruit talent from a wider geography,” the institute said.

“As a result, they may opt to employ only the core staff required for in-person collaboration and decision-making while outsourcing and offshoring those who are not.”

The conclusions come amid disagreement between business leaders about “hybrid” working, in which some employees switch between remote and office working.

In the banking world, leaders are split between mobilising workforces to return to the office, or allowing them to continue working from home.

David Solomon, Goldman Sachs’ group chief executive, has described working from home as an “aberration”. James Gorman, the boss of Morgan Stanley, its rival investment bank, said: “If you can go into a restaurant in New York City, you can come into the office.”

Despite the Goldman Sachs boss’s objection to home working, the bank has delayed its plans to bring all UK staff back into the office in June because the government has extended coronavirus restrictions to July 19.

Blair called on the government to develop a strategy to make roles secure in the UK, but also exploiting the opportunities of remote working.

Unsurprisingly Online accessibility was pretty near the top of the list, followed by the Internet, Email and of course access to those essential Files.  People also thought Logistics was important in terms of how you organise your time together with decent Facilities (ie a computer, desk and chair!) plus some IT advice if the computer stops playing ball. Finally and somewhat surprisingly, many of you are obviously night owls because good Lighting came into the equation too.
